History & Amenities

On November 1st, 1997, The Hangar Sport & Events Centre opened its doors and quickly became known as the place to play indoor soccer in Toronto.  The venue consisted of five indoor artificial turf fields, and was a catalyst for the growth of indoor soccer in Ontario.

Prior to being an indoor sports facility, the buildings were owned by Dehavilland Aircraft Company and employed some 2,400 employees.  The facility produced thousands of planes including The Avro Anson, The Tiger Moth, and The Mosquito Fighter-Bomber.  In the mid-1950s, in response to the onsite military expansion, de Havilland moved its operations to newly constructed modern facilities to the southeast section of Downsview Park, where they reside today as Bombardier.

Throughout the '60s, '70s, and '80s, the site was used by the Canadian Military and was known as Canadian Forces Base Toronto (CFBT).  With the demise of the Cold War, and a restructuring of the Armed Forces, the role of CFBT became less significant, and the base was eventually decommissioned on April 1st, 1996.

Today The Hangar Sport and Events Centre consists of four indoor soccer fields, a ball hockey arena, two multi-sport courts, and three outdoor full-size artificial turf soccer fields.

The operation also consists of several outdoor event locations that can accommodate patrons from anywhere between 1,000 and 40,000.  Some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry including the Rolling Stones and AC/DC have performed at the site, and hundreds of cultural and community events have also taken place at Downsview Park over the years.
